FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE – CARMEN PETERSON (337-4401 EXT. 373):  The Jr. High and High School have had many absentees due to sicknesses this week. We do not have any confirmed cases of strep or influenza at this time. Please remember that the number one way to fight illnesses is through good hand washing. Please use hand sanitizers that are available throughout the building and scrub hands with soap and water throughout the day. If you are not feeling well, please come down to the nurse's office to see me before texting your parents to come get you from school.

·         Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

·         Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.

·         Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

·         Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

2016 CHILD DEVELOPMENT DAYS:  The School District of Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton, in cooperation with surrounding communities and agencies that provide services to families with young children, will host the 2016 Child Development Day on April 14 from 3:30-6:30 in the Elementary Gym.  This will include a booth for registration for 4K. They need to be 4 before September 1, 2016.  Families who are on our census will receive a letter towards the end of March with more information.  If you are not sure if you are on the list, please call Kathy Jones at 337-4420.

Families with children between the ages of 2 years 10 months to 4 years will be invited to celebrate their child’s development.  Parents, as your child’s first teacher we recognize you as partners in your child’s education.  This informal screening allows your child to play with others while observers complete a developmental checklist which is shared with parents.  Agencies from the community will offer a wealth of materials to inform you of resources available in this area.  Car seat safety information will be available as well as an onsite inspection at you request.

Child Development Day has three primary goals:

1.        To provide families with information concerning children’s normal sequence of growth and development from birth to age 5.

2.        To provide families with information regarding service available in the community and county.

3.        To identify young children who may need a further assessment in the following areas: physical, sensory, personal, social, adaptive, large and fine motor, communication and cognition.

We need your support to assist with our Child Find Program.  If you are aware of any children of the above ages, please contact Kathy Jones at 337-4420 extension 378.

Come share a half hour or so with your child.  This is a celebration to support families whose young children are our future!

Ontario Public Library News: Laurie Erickson - Library Director  608-337-4651

·         Tax time is upon us.  The library has Wisconsin forms and instructions.  We just received Federal 1040 A and 1040 EZ instructions.  The 1040 instructions are not ready yet, but are hopefully coming.  We have or can print Federal forms for you.

·         Preschool Play Groups meet each Wednesday at 10:00am for children ages 3-5 years old.  Bring your child or grandchild and enjoy stories, activities and crafts that are fun and promote school readiness.

·         The Community Garden group will meet Friday, Feb. 12 at 12:00pm to discuss plans for this year’s garden.  Come and help us plan.  There are many ways to be involved and we would love to have YOUR input.

·         Susan Case won this week’s drawing for the Let It Snow adult reading program. She won candy and some foot warmers to enhance her reading pleasure.

·         The Book Group will be discussing Being Mortal by Atul Gawande on Wed. March 9.  There will be a viewing of the PBS documentary Being Mortal at 1:00pm.  The Book Discussion is at 2:00pm.  At 3:00pm Anne Heath from Scenic Bluffs Healthcare will provide information on how to share your choices for how you would like to be cared for when you are no longer able to make those decisions.  You will have the opportunity to complete an Advanced Directive, if desire.  You are invited to attend any or all of the three programs.  Death is something we will all face one day, but it can be hard to talk about. Come and explore how to let others know your wishes.

NORWALK LIBRARY INFO:   Jeanne Rice - Library Director - (608) 823-7473

·         Friday, March 4th, 2016 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm the Mystery Book Group will discuss The Hard Way, by Lee Child, the 10th book in the Jack Reacher series.  From NoveList, provided by BadgerLink:  "...[E]x-military cop Reacher sees more than most people would, and because of that, he's thrust into an explosive situation that's about to blow up in his face.  ... Jack Reacher was alone, the way he liked it, soaking up the hot, electric New York City night, watching a man cross the street to a parked Mercedes and drive it away. The car contained one million dollars in ransom money. And Edward Lane, the man who paid it, will pay even more to get his family back. Lane runs a highly illegal soldiers for hire operation. He will use any amount of money and any tool to find his beautiful wife and child."

·         The N-O-W Traveling Preschool Playgroup will visit the library Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016 from 10 to 11:30 am.  The theme will be Dr. Seuss Birthday.  Stories will be read, crafts made, games played, and treats eaten.  The Playgroup will also be here Wednesday, March 30th, 2016 from 10 to 11:30 am.

·         .  The theme will be Spring!

WILTON LIBRARY NEWS:  Gina Rae - Library Director – (608)435-6710

·         We have one more way to help you enjoy Brookwood's performance of A Midsummer Night's the play!  Our library book discussion group will be reading Shakespeare this month, attending the production and discussing both on Monday, March 14th.  Contact the library if you'd like to participate.   The library will be showing "The Dream" episode of PBS's Shakespeare Uncovered on February 19th at 10am, 1pm & 4pm.  This is a "no school" day so we are inviting both students and adults to attend.  The episode is hosted by Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville.

·         Citizen Scientist Ben Johnston will be returning to the library on Friday, March 11 at 10:30 am to teach frog calls and the procedure for participating in the Wisconsin Frog and Toad Survey.  There are only 12 species of frogs in Wisconsin.  Learn them now so when the peepers signal the return of spring you will not mistake them for a cricket frog.

·         Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Kelly will be joining our preschool play group on February 17th.  All children, birth to Kindergarten are encouraged to join us for stories, crafts and a snack.

·         We are offering a chance for adults to destress the second and fourth Tuesday of every month with our adult coloring group.  We will have plenty of supplies for beginners.  Our next gathering is on February 23th at 4pm.

·         The library's chess club:  The Check Mates will meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month.  Our next meeting is February 16th at 4pm.  Players of all levels of experience are invited to attend.

·         Homeschooling families will gather on February 26th from 10-12.  We offer space for homeschool families to meet and share ideas as well as a craft for the kids.

·         Things might be a bit messy when you visit the library this week.  We will begin to paint our space on February 9th.  The library will remain open regular hours during this time and ask for your patience.  After 15 years at the Community Center we are excited for the change.
